The party went completely silent.

Twenty people stared at my brother.

“We had a memorial,” the woman said. Her name was Lupe Medina. She’d lived across the street from my parents for thirty years. “At St. Timothy’s. You cried. You said he went peacefully in his sleep.”

Another neighbor stepped forward. A big man in a Diamondbacks cap.

“I gave you two hundred bucks for the flowers,” he said slowly. “You said Marisol couldn’t afford to fly home.”

Ray’s face went red.

“It’s complicated. He wanted it that way. He didn’t want people visiting.”

“I never wanted anything,” my father whispered from the lounge chair.

Everyone turned.

His voice was weak, but it was clear.

“Ray told me Marisol was dead,” he said. “Car accident in Denver. He showed me a newspaper. He said I had nobody left.”

He looked up at me with wet eyes.

“I cried for you every night, mija.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Tiffany dropped the margarita pitcher. It shattered on the pool deck.

The sirens were getting closer.

“He’s confused,” Ray said, backing toward the house. “This is what I’ve been dealing with. He makes things up.”

“Then explain the padlock,” I said. “Explain the dog bowl.”

Ray didn’t answer.

The ambulance arrived. Then two Mesa police cars.

The paramedics took Dad’s core temperature on the patio. 105.1.

“Ma’am,” the paramedic said to me, “if you’d found him an hour later, he wouldn’t have made it.”

While they loaded him, an officer asked Ray for his ID.

He didn’t have to search the house very long.

In the kitchen drawer, there was a death certificate. A fake one, printed off the internet, with Dad’s name on it. There was a sympathy card from the American Legion with a check inside. There were Dad’s VA pension statements, still arriving every month, deposited into an account in Ray’s name.

And there was a printout from a real estate website.

Dad’s house. Listed for sale. $489,000.

With an open house scheduled for the following Saturday.

Ray had told the neighbors Dad was dead so nobody would ask why they never saw him. He’d told Dad I was dead so he’d stop asking to call me. He’d told me Dad was “confused” so I’d stop asking to talk to him.

And every month, he’d taken my $1,200 for medication my father never received.

The pharmacy confirmed it. Dad’s prescriptions hadn’t been filled in eleven months.

Ray was charged with elder abuse, theft from a vulnerable adult, forgery, and fraud. Tiffany was charged as an accomplice. The judge called it “one of the cruelest cases of financial exploitation this court has seen.”

The house was never sold.

Dad spent nine days in the hospital. I stayed every one of them.

On the fourth day, he finally asked me the question I’d been dreading.

“Why didn’t you come sooner, mija?”

I told him the truth. That Ray said he was napping. That Ray said he was confused. That I believed it because it was easier than flying home.

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he squeezed my hand.

“You came,” he said. “That’s what I’ll remember.”

I didn’t take another travel contract.

I took a job at a hospital twenty minutes from Dad’s house. We put in a new AC unit. We painted the garage door bright blue, so he’d never have to look at it the same way again.

Lupe from across the street brings him the crossword every morning.

Last week, Dad finished one in pen and slid it across the kitchen table to me.

Eight letters. “Someone who comes back for you.”

He’d written MARISOL.

It didn’t fit.

He didn’t care.

THE END.

──────────────

Check on the people you love yourself. Don’t let anyone else tell you they’re “fine.” 💛
